Editorial Policy & Data Methodology

How Car Data Index researches, verifies, updates and corrects vehicle specifications and editorial content.

Who creates this site

Car Data Index is maintained by an independent automotive data desk. Every published guide carries a byline, and every specification page identifies the public or manufacturer sources used. We do not present invented personal credentials or anonymous claims of testing.

How specification pages are produced

A model name from a registry is not treated as a finished specification page. Publication follows this sequence:

  • The vehicle entity is discovered through the NHTSA vPIC manufacturer registry
  • Generation codes and production years are checked against manufacturer archives
  • Powertrain data is compared with manufacturer data sheets and type-approval records
  • US fuel-economy figures are matched to official EPA certification records
  • Dimensions and performance claims are cross-checked before the page becomes indexable
  • The source links used for that page are published with the data

Imported model placeholders remain outside search-engine indexes until they contain verified generation-level data. This protects readers from empty catalogue pages and prevents volume from taking priority over accuracy.

How editorial guides are produced

Guides begin with a defined reader question, not a keyword quota. The writer is expected to add direct explanation, specific examples, relevant calculations, links to primary sources and contextual links to the vehicle data discussed. The editor checks factual claims, readability, search intent and whether the article adds something beyond a summary of existing search results.

Automation may assist with database matching, formatting and quality checks. It is not accepted as a substitute for source verification, original analysis or editorial accountability.

Source hierarchy

  1. 1.Primary: manufacturer technical documentation, NHTSA and EPA records
  2. 2.Secondary: type-approval filings and established technical references
  3. 3.Context only: enthusiast and publisher sources, never used as the sole authority for a critical specification

Where markets differ, the page identifies the measurement standard. EPA, WLTP and NEDC economy figures are not presented as interchangeable.

Corrections and update policy

Readers can report an error through the contact page. A correction must include the affected URL and, where possible, a source. Verified corrections are applied to the data record and the page modification date changes only when the content itself changes. We do not refresh dates merely to make old content appear new.

Independence

Car Data Index is not affiliated with a vehicle manufacturer. Advertising does not determine which vehicles, conclusions or sources appear. Sponsored content, if introduced in the future, will be labelled clearly and separated from specification records.
